Grand Slam Old Tom Morris Award

On February 6, 2013, Michael J. Hurdzan, Ph.D., received the Old Tom Morris Award – the highest honor of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Subsequently, he became only the fifth man in the history of golf to achieve the non-playing “grand slam” as the recipient of the highest honor from each of the big three of our industry – the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the American Society of Golf Course Architects and the Golf Course Builders Association of America.

The legendary Bobby Jones, the only player in golf history to hold all four major titles in a single year. The feat, until then considered impossible, and still considered on of the greatest accomplishments in all of sport, was eventually dubbed the “Grand Slam” by the Atlanta Journal’s O.B. Keeler, who borrowed the term the card game Bridge.
